August SMART Design Tips

It’s summer and the outdoors is drenched in sunshine. Here are some SMART tips to bring some of that happy yellow indoors:

Surround yourself in sunshine:    Soft yellows read light and airy. A creamy vanilla yellow provides a good base neutral that delivers the perfect amount of color without being too bland. Peachy yellow walls are reminiscent of sand on a beach. Yellow glaze gives walls a calming translucent look. A splash of yellow on the ceiling (kids rooms, kitchens, homes with low ceilings) draws the eye up and makes your room appear larger than it is

Make a fabric statement:  Introduce yellow patterned pillows or cushions in any space you work or play. Curtains are a great place to add yellow; creamy linen at the windows, wide stripes in a shower, cafés in the kitchen or kids room. Use a dose of yellow as contrast to darker colors in the room.

Accent with Gold:  Gold is back with a vengeance, and gold is a form of yellow after all.  Add some pillows with gold spun threads. Add a brilliant gold light fixture or two. Bring in some brass or splashy gold trimmed furniture, like a campaign chest, coffee table or small occasional table. Hang art with a campy gold filigree frame.

Re-purpose furniture:  Nothing adds more pop to a space then a dose of yellow. Paint the tired kitchen chairs or window seat a lemon color. Brighten your kitchen island base cabinet with a yummy squash yellow. Pump up your office by introducing painted sunshine yellow bookcases.

Try a feature wall:  Look for a wallpaper that uses interesting patterns on a yellow background. Lattice, lace, oblongs, circles, etc. Then accent a wall in your bedroom, home office, an eating area, entry or bathroom.
