Sep’t. SMART Design Tips

Fall is on its way – time to swap hot weather accessories for cold. Here are some SMART tips to help you get it right!

Start by location:  Identify areas that may need accessories

Occasional pieces (coffee table, end tables, sofa table, credenza, piano)

Bookcase/Entertainment Center

Make your selections:  Look for similarities in items

Color-“punches” up helps to unify your color palette throughout the room

Size – items should vary in size for more interest

Theme – these items will reflect your individual style and personality

Materials – crystal, brass, pottery, silver, etc.

Arrange your accessories:

Avoid Clutter: less is more –  you can’t’ appreciate the individuality of an item when there are too many to look at / avoid “line-up” of small items; use larger scale items for more impact /  edit and store, sell, rotate or donate

Create Balance & Scale: group items close together / use odd numbers in arrangements / look for balance size (scale) and volume(weight) as items relate to each other and the surface they are placed upon

Review your selections:    Examine each surface and determine if you have achieved balance, continuity and effective accessorizing:

Mantle – keep it simple, single item makes more of a statement / select items to enhance artwork over mantel

Occasional pieces – include a strong, vertical element (vase of flowers, lamp, candlestick) /  create a theme or tell a story

Book Cases/Entertainment Centers – mix books with objects for visual interest /consider leaving some shelves book-free / use artwork, pictures or accessories as alternatives

Think outside the box:    Look past figurines for accessory choices

Use items that bring in “energy” – fresh or imitation / Plants, branches & flowers /Fruit & vegetables

Get creative – Fish bowls & terrariums / Finials, statuary / Books and more books
